Pre-Diabetes

Bob R. Asks: “I have pre-diabetes and I am trying to lose weight. How many servings of fruits and vegetables should I have each day?”

This is a great question. First of all weight loss can prevent the development of full blown diabetes, so I am very glad you are trying to lose weight. Fruits and vegetables not only contain vital nutrients we need for our bodies, but many are also full of fiber and help us feel fuller longer. The recommendation for fruits and vegetables is about 5 a day. Remember to control portions of fruits and starchy vegetables (like potatoes, corn, and beans). Fresh fruit should be about a one cup portion (1/2 cup for canned) and starchy vegetables should be about a 1/2 cup portion. For more detailed information on portion sizes visit www.foodpicker.org. If you are trying to lose weight remember to get 30-60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise most days of the week.
